Jupiter 2-8-2002

This was one of my early attempts at photographing Jupiter with a Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera with an eyepiece and my f/15 7" LX-50 Meade Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope.

All of these images were  processed with Corel Photopaint 9 using the unsharp mask, tone curve, hue, guassian blur and contrast.  All of these are eyeballed for best iamge

Time: 2/8/2002 11:20pm PST.  With 20mm eyepiece

Camera set to f/4 400 ASA Focus: infinity Fine resolution with electronic zoom.  Exposure: 1/8 s

Note that the seeing was exceptionally good just for this one shot.  I just got lucky.  The great red spot (GRS) was very dim at this time of year yet it is clearly visible.  Note also the smaller spot to the right of the GRS.

Notice that to see the 3 moons, the image brightness had to be increased, causing detail on Jupiter to be washed out.
